Math experts from WestEd’s Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics team will present at the 2022 California Mathematics Council (CMC) North 65th Annual Conference. The conference will take place at the Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California, from December 2 to December 4, 2022.
The California Mathematics Council (CMC) is a state-wide organization, with officers elected by the entire membership and a governing board appointed by the officers. The CMC functions as an umbrella for the three regional sections: North, Central and South. The northern section serves educators from the northern California border with Oregon, south to Monterey.
This year’s conference theme is Leaning In, Moving Forward, Mathematics for All. The three-day annual meeting focuses on important issues for leaders and teachers in math education.
Add our three sessions to your conference calendar. See the schedule below.
Sessions
Saturday, December 3, 2022
Session: Supporting English Learnings in Mathematics Grades 9-12
Presenter: Guillermo Lopez
Time: 8 a.m.–9 a.m.
Location: Sea Galaxy – Nautilus West
Program Description: How can teachers plan for instruction that maximizes students’ success? Teachers will learn how to plan for rigorous (high challenge) grade level tasks, while embedding instructional scaffolds (high support) in mathematics. This session focuses on deepening an understanding of the components of high-quality instruction in mathematics that provides English Learner students with opportunities to develop mathematical conceptual knowledge and English simultaneously.
Session: Purposeful Questioning = Access, Ownership, Understanding
Presenter: Mardi Gale
Time: 10:40 a.m.–12 p.m.
Location: North Woods – Scripps
Program Description: Are you asking questions that focus or funnel student thinking? What questions reflect the magic of mathematics and address equity? Increase understanding, maintain rigor, build ownership through purposeful questioning:called for by Principles to Actions. Purposeful questioning also guides productive struggle and gives all students the opportunity to think, communicate, and immerse themselves in the content. Practice focussing questions and tweak funneling questions to support students.

Participate in the Citizen Math Impact Study
WestEd is conducting a study beginning summer of 2023 that will now assess the impact of Citizen Math at a larger scale. Participating teachers will receive free lessons and professional support to implement these powerful materials in your school, as well as a stipend. Stop by WestEd’s exhibit booth (#505) to learn about an opportunity for middle school math departments to participate in the Citizen Math Impact Study: Developing Informed, Productive Citizens in Math Class.
Exhibit Booth Hours:
Friday, December 2: 1:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m.
Saturday, December 3: 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
