WestEd’s Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) will be at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Annual Conference, November 15–18, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee.
The annual conference is designed for all early childhood professionals, including classroom teachers, center directors, administrators, and leaders who prepare, mentor, and support early childhood professionals.
WestEd’s PITC is a comprehensive training system that promotes responsive, caring relationships for infants and toddlers and employs evidence-based training materials and strategies for the early education field.

Session: Can a Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers Prioritize the Child, Their Interests, Their Family and Inform Formative Assessment?
Time: 9:30 a.m.–10:45 a.m. (Central)

Presenters: Amber Morabito (WestEd) and Diane Harkins (WestEd)
This session will cover the PITC’s relationship-based approach to planning learning experiences for infants (birth to three). Our presenters will examine how to prioritize the child and include the family while planning curricula using a reflective planning process (i.e., observation, documentation, planning, and implementation) that develops and nurtures the same strategies and skills that facilitate the completion of child formative assessments.
Participants will hear discussions, participate in reflective conversations, and explore tools and strategies supporting infant learning. In addition, the topic will turn to a necessary paradigm shift that views the care teacher as a loving facilitator of learning who plans reflective, intentional curricula.
Family, culture, and home language are foundational components of the PITC curriculum. Family partnership and engagement help determine the needs and interests that can be incorporated into the child’s learning experiences. This session will support educators in strengthening their efforts with curriculum planning that inform formative assessments, which ultimately support the learning, progression, and development of young children.
