Overview
Kevin King is a leader in the field of educational assessment. With more than 20 years of large-scale assessment experience, influenced by 9 years of science classroom teaching experience, he provides assessment design and development solutions for states and districts as they implement their assessment systems. King specializes in designing and implementing innovative assessments measuring complex constructs, and he helps clients design and implement assessments for a range of purposes and populations, including science, alternate measures, inclusivity, and indigenous communities.
King has supported multiple states in the design and ongoing implementation of science assessments and assessment systems to meet the expectations of the Framework for K–12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas. He supports states in the application of their unique multidimensional science standards and in understanding the variations and implications of those variations across states. King has supported several national assessment consortia for both CCSS and NGSS assessments, including the development of the Science Assessment Item Collaborative Assessment Framework and Cognitive Loading in Three-Dimensional NGSS Assessment.
Before joining WestEd, King oversaw assessment development activities for all content areas for the Utah State Board of Education. Prior to serving in that role, he developed assessments for science, academic language proficiency, and social studies. He also supported Utah’s participation in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. His goal is to work alongside clients to support them in achieving their assessment needs in designing and implementing valid measures of student understanding in fair, valid, and innovative ways.
