Everyone Has a Role in Effective Data Cultures

This presentation will outline research and best practice foundations for building and sustaining data cultures within education agencies. This includes developing data literacy, the supporting technologies, the vision and purposes for data use, the alignment of educational questions and issues to the requisite data, and the need for leadership to support efficient data use. Presenters will use research findings such as the IES Practice Guide (Hamilton et al., 2009) and various NCES Forum Guides and draw on work in two states at both the LEA and SEA levels.
The session will engage attendees in discussing their agencies’ context to offer guidance about practical steps they can take to develop, embed, and sustain a data culture that will promote useful and responsible data use. It will separate data for accountability versus continuous improvement, identifying key processes for acculturating data use.
Applying the Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement: Four Years of Lessons Learned

The Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement Framework was created by the Center on School Turnaround at WestEd, and first shared at the National ESEA Conference in 2018. Since its release, the Framework has supported school improvement planning and implementation efforts at the school, district, and state levels.
The Domains contain twelve practices that research and experience suggest are key to fast and significant progress. This session offers insight into how to apply these practices by incorporating the voices of practitioners as they examine on their own school improvement planning and implementation efforts. Based on case studies and lessons learned, the presenter will offer considerations for launching new efforts or jumpstarting ones that may have stalled.
