(Past Event) Barbara Jones to Present at the 2019 National Indian Education Association Convention

Barbara Jones

WestEd’s Barbara Jones will present at the 50th annual National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Convention. The conference will take place on October 8 through 12 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The 2019 convention theme, “Celebrating 50 Years of Building Education Nations: Strengthening and Advancing Native Control of Native Education,” recognizes the role educators and communities play in shaping the future leaders of Native education.

Jones will facilitate the workshop, “Meeting the Needs of Native American Students Through Formative Assessment: Emerging Findings From Our Work With Arizona Schools,” on Saturday, October 12, 8:30-9:45am.

The workshop will highlight the role formative assessment and culturally responsive instruction can have in supporting Native student achievement and in developing student agency and learner identities within rigorous academic contexts. Jones will share teacher and student voices and initial findings from Student Agency in Learning (SAIL), a year-long, intensive formative assessment course created by WestEd.

Jones is a Senior Professional Learning Specialist for the Learning Innovations Program at WestEd. She brings expertise in areas related to formative assessment, culturally and linguistically responsive instruction, Indigenous education, and professional learning.
