Join WestEd’s Peter Mangione at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) 2021 Virtual Conference, November 6-9. NAEYC’s Annual Conference is the largest early childhood education gathering in the world.
In their presentation, Everyone Belongs: Creating Authentically Inclusive and Equitable Infant and Toddler Care, Peter Mangione, Senior Director, Early Childhood Strategic Initiatives at WestEd and Senta Greene of Full Circle Consulting Systems will discuss family engagement practices that promote inclusive and equitable infant and toddler care.
Inclusive and equitable infant and toddler care welcomes every child and family, listens to and values their voices, and recognizes and honors the strength in families. In contrast, when childcare providers or programs view children and families through a deficit lens, they see children and families as not fitting into a preferred image or idea of how a family is supposed to look and function and view them as needing improvement. In this session, Mangione and Greene will share:
- How to encourage families to be themselves
- How to present families with the possibility of understanding themselves, seeing their strengths, and understanding their children better
- How to raise awareness of messages conveyed through language
After the session, participants will understand how to:
- Welcome infants, toddlers, and their families into a care program and invite their participation
- Apply the three B’s – breakdown, break apart, and breakthrough – in their practices
- Use language to engage children, families, teachers, and caregivers
