Session: How to Use High-Impact Coaching to Dramatically Improve Student Learning: Lessons from a Successful School Turnaround
Time & Location: 1:45-3:45pm, Room: Breakers I/J

In this session, participants will learn how high-impact coaching helped an independent public charter school that was on the brink of closing due to low performance build a coherent, coordinated system of improvement leading to dramatic gains in student learning.

Participants will explore the barriers to change that may exist in their own schools, discuss how to overcome those barriers, and identify ways they can use the model to systemically improve leadership and instructional practices, and ultimately, student achievement.

Presenters: Aimee Evan, WestEd; Rachel Crouch; Perry Street Preparatory Public Charter School; Janalee Jordan-Meldrum, The TenSquare Group; and Kelly Smith, Perry Street Preparatory Public Charter School

Tuesday, July 2

Session: What Charter School Authorizers Need to Know About Building Highly Effective Boards
Time & Location: 1:45-3pm, Room: Mandalay E

Every charter school needs an effective board that provides firm and strategic oversight and ensures that the school is successful academically, financially, and operationally. Students and the entire school community feel the impact when boards will not or are unable to hold schools accountable for performance and compliance.

In this session, the presenters will provide targeted, specific strategies designed to help authorizers build and support strong charter school boards while allowing charters to maintain their autonomy.

Presenters: Carrie Irvin, Charter Board Partners; Ethan Ashley, Orleans Parish School Board; Steve Canavero, WestEd; and Rick Cruz, DC Public Charter School Board
