The National Center for Systemic Improvement (NCSI) at WestEd is pleased to present the fourth session in our Research to Practice Spotlight Series. This fourth session will focus on intervention for elementary students struggling in math, including students with disabilities.

We will review the evidence-based recommendations in the What Works Clearinghouse practice guide Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Intervention in the Elementary Grades and facilitate discussions on ways SEAs and LEAs can support educators to implement recommendations with diverse learners in varied contexts.

About the Series:
NCSI is hosting a series of webinars aimed at unpacking key evidence-based practices and recommendations to promote learning for students with disabilities and others struggling to learn reading and math. Participants will hear about key practices and considerations for SEAs and LEAs in supporting educators with implementation.

Presenters

Laura Berry Kuchle

Laura Berry Kuchle, Ph.D., is a Senior Researcher at the American Institutes for Research (AIR). She currently works with the National Center for Systemic Improvement (NCSI) and Texas Special Education Performance Diagnostic (SPD) project. For NCSI, she co-leads technical assistance related to Effective Instruction. Her background is in school psychology.

Kathleen L. Pfannenstiel

Kathleen L. Pfannenstiel, Ph.D., senior researcher at American Institutes for Research (AIR). Currently, Dr. Pfannenstiel serves as the Data Quality Coordinator and previously served as the co-lead of the Evidence-based Practices for Teaching and Learning cross-state learning collaborative for the National Center on Systemic Improvement (NCSI). She is also a technical assistance facilitator to four states. Dr. Pfannenstiel’s background is in special education with an emphasis in math.

Robin Finelli Schumacher

Robin F. Schumacher, Ph.D., is a principal research scientist at Instructional Research Group. With over 20 years of experience, she specializes in designing and evaluating mathematics interventions for at-risk students. She has overseen several randomized controlled trials funded by agencies such as NSF, IES, and OSEP. Her expertise includes evidence-based practices for teaching fractions, word problems, and algebraic reasoning. Robin has led professional development sessions for mathematics interventionists, focusing on infusing evidence-based practices into preventative intervention.

Nicole Bucka

Nicole Bucka is a Senior Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Implementation Specialist with extensive experience in education leadership. She has served as a district MTSS Coordinator, special educator and department chair, English Language Learner (ELL) teacher, and general education English teacher. In addition to her professional expertise, Nicole has held two terms on a school board, giving her a broad understanding of educational policy and systems change. As the proud parent of two children with significant disabilities in public schools, Nicole brings a unique perspective to any research-to-practice discussion.
