(Past Event) Nicholas Catechis Will Present at the TESOL Greece 40th Annual International Convention

Educators attending this year’s TESOL Greece 40th Annual International Convention will have the opportunity to attend a workshop with Nicholas Catechis, Senior Program Associate in WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project. Catechis draws on two decades of teaching and administrative experience to promote the academic success of English learners. His work through QTEL builds teacher capacity through professional development and in-school coaching. He helps teachers support the conceptual, academic, and linguistic development of English learners and deliver high-quality instruction aligned with today’s college- and career-readiness standards.

TESOL Greece is a non-profit professional association for teachers of English as a foreign language working in Greece. The 2019 theme is “The 5 Ts of TESOL: Teach, Train, Transform, Transcend, Trust.” The Convention will offer attendees a weekend of professional development through presentations and workshops, and will host four invited plenary speakers, including Luciana de Oliveira, Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto, Malcolm Mann, and Dorothy Zemach.

On Saturday, March 2, Catechis will present a lesson that invites students to analyze, compare and contrast, and closely read primary and secondary sources related to maps of a specific period in history, while simultaneously developing the language practices needed to engage in this disciplinary learning. The activities presented will provide a model for teachers to transform their own classrooms and materials so that they can transcend learning and develop in their students new ways of thinking.
