(Past Event) Promising Programs to Promote Student Mathematical Learning and Enjoyment Outside of the Classroom

Join WestEd’s Brent Jackson, Jill Neumayer DePiper, Maria Salciccioli, and Rebecca Perry in this webinar series on joyful, non-traditional mathematical learning in classroom, out-of-school, or summer program settings.

This webinar series, hosted by WestEd with support from the Overdeck Family Foundation, highlights non-traditional mathematics activities that effectively create positive learning environments for students to develop, enjoy, and build confidence in their mathematics abilities. The sessions will feature opportunities to engage directly with the upper elementary and middle grade program resources, hear reviews from a teacher panel, and consider how to use these resources and programs to create joyful mathematical learning.

Session 1: Getting Together for Math Nights and Festivals: Principles to Foster Students’ Curiosity and Love of Math

Play-based mathematics events in schools and communities can inspire student curiosity and spark joy. Webinar participants will experience play-based activities, learn about the principles that create positive mathematics festival experiences, and learn how to bring those principles, or even a festival, to the students they work with.

Session 2: Math Games that Are More than Play: Learning in Upper Elementary Classrooms

Activities in mathematics classrooms can foster students’ development of mathematics skills while also increasing their enjoyment of doing mathematics. Participants will have the opportunity to play these mathematics games and also consider how to integrate attention to social-emotional learning into mathematics games and activities they already use in their classroom.

Session 3: Unique Opportunities for Building Students’ Mathematical Skills and Understanding Outside of School Time

Date: Tuesday, November 14

When provided with multiple and varied opportunities for skill-building, students can develop their mathematical strengths and flexible thinking to be able to solve tasks without following one particular strategy. Participants will receive an overview of how two programs support middle grade student learning on common mathematical content. They will have the opportunity to try program activities and they will hear from teachers who have used or might use them in the future. Participants will also be able to discuss the implications of such programs for student learning and teaching more broadly.
