Learn how to transform instruction with the Reading Apprenticeship Framework

Reading Apprenticeship 101 is a facilitated asynchronous learning experience that provides a solid foundation in the Reading Apprenticeship Framework’s four dimensions of learning—social, personal, cognitive, and knowledge-building—and the development of these interacting dimensions through metacognitive conversation. The course explores Reading Apprenticeship’s impact on student motivation and achievement for all subject areas and levels.
This course introduces the Reading Apprenticeship framework with practical classroom assignments. Participants will engage in professional reading, view classroom videos, contribute to online discussions, try Reading Apprenticeship routines in their classrooms, and complete a final paper.
After a two-hour starter module, participants will need to devote approximately five hours a week to the course outside the classroom. During the course, colleagues in the class and a facilitator with extensive Reading Apprenticeship coaching experience provide guidance and feedback.
This course is a Phase 1 Reading Apprenticeship professional learning opportunity equivalent to other Phase 1 courses and seminars.
Who Should Attend
- Higher education (university, college, community, and technical college) instructors of all subject areas and levels, including transfer-level developmental and career-technical courses
- Required: Participants must have access to their own or a “borrowed” in-person or online classroom during the seven weeks of the course to practice Reading Apprenticeship routines.

- Develop Reading Apprenticeship routines through shared insight and feedback and observing how other participants are implementing metacognitive routines in their classrooms

The California State University-Monterey Bay College of Extended Education offers CEUs for an additional fee. The purchase of CEUs is optional and not required for registration. View the CSUMB Reading Apprenticeship course catalog. CSUMB will open CEU registration a few weeks after the course has started. Check with your district office, as CEUs are not academic units.
Refund policy: WestEd offers full refunds up to two weeks before the start of the course. A 50% refund will be granted if the request to withdraw is received within two weeks before the course begins.
