Members of NSF’s Eddie Bernice Johnson INCLUDES National Network will gather at the 2023 Convening: Sustaining Equity-Driven Systems Change, August 3-4, at the Westin City Center in Washington, D.C. to support the movement to broaden participation in STEM education and careers.
Through peer learning sessions, engaging plenaries and panel discussions, and interactive workshops, members of the INCLUDES National Network will have opportunities to share with and learn from their peers, from NSF and other federal agency representatives, from the INCLUDES Coordination Hub, and from the students and participants most directly affected by our work.
Attendees will build and deepen relationships; identify, elevate, and strengthen commonalities and connections across broadening participation efforts; and learn about future actions we can take together to sustain our work.
WestEd experts Kathy Booth, Jaclyn Tejwani, Quay Dorsey, and Laura Lara-Brady will present on a variety of topics at the event. See our schedule below.
August 3, 2023
Plenary 1: How We Can Know When We’re Changing Systems
Time: 9:30 am-10:25 am
Presenters: Kathy Booth, Co-Principal Investigator, INCLUDES Coordination Hub, WestEd; and Alice Opalka, Evaluator, INCLUDES Coordination Hub, ORS Impact
Since the inception of the INCLUDES National Network, members have connected with like-minded peers, shared strategies and opportunities for equity-driven changes, and forged connections around common structural barriers within the STEM ecosystem. How can we build on these activities and measure our progress toward sustainable, equity-driven systems change?
The session helps to clarify the relationships between measuring progress on Collaborative Infrastructure, broadening participation in STEM, and equity-driven systems change. It also provides insights from Network members about the realities of implementing and measuring systems change.
Workshop 2: Practices
Time: 10:45 am-12:15 pm
Presenters: Kathy Booth, Co-Principal Investigator, INCLUDES Coordination Hub, WestEd; and Jaclyn Tejwani, Evaluation Director, Inclusive Graduate Education Network (IGEN) Alliance, WestEd
This breakout session will explore efforts to change the espoused activities of institutions, coalitions, networks, and other entities targeted to improving social and environmental progress, including the procedures, guidelines, or informal shared habits that comprise their work within the entity.
Workshop 5: Power Dynamics
Time: 10:45 am-12:15 pm
Presenters: Robin Parent, Project Manager and Backbone Co-lead, The National Alliance for Inclusive & Diverse STEM Faculty Association of Public and Land-grant Universities; and Quay Dorsey, Shared Measures Task Area Lead, INCLUDES Coordination Hub, WestEd
This breakout session will explore the interaction between systems change and the distribution of decision-making power, authority, and both formal and informal influence among individuals and organizations.
Workshop 6: Mental Models
Time: 10:45 am-12:15 pm
Presenters: Sarah Hug, Evaluation Co-Lead, Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) Alliance, University of Colorado, Boulder; and Laura Lara-Brady, INCLUDES Coordination Hub, WestEd
This breakout room will explore the interaction between systems change and Habits of Thought—deeply held beliefs and assumptions and taken-for-granted ways of operating that influence how we think, what we do, and how we talk.
