One in three California students reported being bullied the previous year, according to recent data from WestEd’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS).

The data come as the State Board of Education now requires California school districts to create a positive school climate plan, states this EdSource article.

School climate must be measured by surveying students, teachers, and parents about their sense of safety at school, among other indicators.

“It’s a time for districts to pay attention to what they’re actually doing, and whether it’s having any effect,” says Gregory Austin, quoted in the article. Austin is Director of the Health & Justice Program at WestEd.

In addition to Austin and CHKS, the article also cites the What Works Brief #7: Harassment and Bullying, published by WestEd and cowritten by WestEd Research Associate Meagan O’Malley.
