Tier 1 Instructional Practice and Coaching

Transform K–12 instruction and ensure equitable outcomes with professional development and job-embedded coaching that helps students understand content standards and prepare for postsecondary success.

On This Page

Tier 1 Instructional Practice and Coaching builds the capacity of teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to implement high-quality instructional practices for grades K–12 with support for planning, implementation, and follow-up to ensure continuous improvement.

How We Help

Teacher leaders and instructional coaches will deepen their knowledge about effective Tier 1 instructional practices to support teachers by successfully implementing standards-based instruction. Participants receive modeling and practice in reflective and directive coaching approaches, learn to provide feedback to teachers following classroom observation, and facilitate data-driven dialogues that will help teachers plan instruction.

Instructional leaders build coaching skills while simultaneously improving school practices through ongoing instructional observations and teacher feedback based on the following objectives:

  • Deepen implementation and sustainability of school improvement plans.
  • Refine or establish an instructional coaching system for conducting ongoing classroom observations with teacher feedback.
  • Build the capacity of administrators to support teachers in implementing quality research-based instructional practice aligned to state academic standards.
  • Strengthen the capacity of teachers to implement rigorous, standards-based instructional practice across the curriculum.

Connecting Research With Practice

Teachers learn research-based instructional practices that help students meet or exceed state standards, including understanding complex concepts. We ground our practice in the highest yield, research-based strategies that impact student learning that are related to depth of knowledge, standards and objectives, student engagement, academic conversation, formative assessment, and lesson planning. Throughout our work we incorporate theory, demonstration, practice, and ongoing coaching support.
