Spotlight: Comprehensive Support to Improve Success for English Learners
Posted on
This month, WestEd highlights best practices to help you provide high-quality support for English learners, focusing on our latest research, resources, and professional learning opportunities.
As schools and districts continue to embrace diversity, educators must adjust instruction and other supports for English learners and their peers, while ensuring equity for English learners and adequate preparation for success in college and career.
To enrich instruction for English learners, WestEd is pleased to highlight a selection of research-informed best practices:
- Have the willingness and expertise to teach language and subject matter in tandem
- Devote adequate class time specifically for language development
- Cultivate environments where English learners and their families feel safe
- Engage with students using trauma-informed practices
- Participate in professional learning opportunities and PLCs to improve instruction
- Understand how to assess whether a student has a learning disability and provide the necessary supports
