Are you ready to launch your efforts for improving teaching and learning for English learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse students?
This three-day intensive summer institute focuses on understanding the components of high-quality instruction that integrates English as a New Language (ENL) content with NewYork State Standards. Participants will deepen and broaden their understanding of how to plan for rigorous instruction that integrates the Next Generation Learning Standards (NGLS), New York State P–12 Science Learning Standards and the Bilingual Common Core Progressions. The learning is grounded in the Blueprint for ELL Success that provides guidance to New York’s district and school communities to ensure that all ELL/MLL students develop academic literacy, analytical practices, and deep content understanding across the disciplines.
Professional learning is differentiated into four grade spans: PreK-1, 2-3, 4-6, and Middle School content areas of ELA/History and Science/Math. School and district teams are highly encouraged to participate together in the three-day institute for optimal learning and implementation.
An additional leadership session, designed for site and districtleaders, is offered on a fourth day, and focuses on site- anddistrict-level implementation and systems support planning toaddress such aspects as curriculum, multiple program components, and sustaining effective instructional practices to ensure high-quality teaching and learning for all students.
The institute will focus on strengthening teaching and learning in four major areas:
- Fostering collaborative academic conversations among students, abundant writing, and interactive reading around complex texts and intellectually rich content
- Engaging students in text-oriented talk about the language in complex texts
- Observing students closely to provide both planned and just-in-time scaffolding
- Creating positive and culturally responsive learning environments
Participants will engage in collaborative, interactive tasks:
- Discussing key readings, including those related to integrated and stand-alone ENL and culturally responsive teaching
- Participating in and analyzing standards-based, framework-aligned “keystone pedagogies” and model lessons and units
- Sharing and developing new ideas about scaffolding student learning, formative assessment, and equity; and establishing positive learning environments in which all learners can thrive
Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
