Co-sponsored by the Secondary Literacy Partnership as part of the “Voices, Access, and Equity” webinar series.
Is social and emotional learning a priority in your school or district? Would you like to apply it to your school? How do you relate social and emotional learning to academic engagement for your secondary students?
To be ready for college and career, students need to demonstrate independence, build strong content knowledge, cite and use evidence, and comprehend as well as critique. However, data show that many secondary students are inexperienced and unprepared to engage in complex academic literacies.
This archived webinar explores how social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies support secondary literacy. SEL competencies provide a coherent framework for delivering and supporting instruction using a number of strategies, including:
- Metacognitive conversations around text for evidence-based argumentation in science or language arts
- Adapting communication in relation to audience, task, purpose, and discipline
- Coming to understand others’ perspectives and cultures
Emphasis was placed on developing a solid universal foundation of SEL for all students, informed by the California Department of Education’s SEL Guiding Principles.
Participants discussed their experiences with SEL and academic engagement and literacy, and leave with a research-based set of actions to guide their efforts and resources from exemplary districts and schools.
