Early math knowledge is critically important because it predicts students’ academic achievement in middle and even high school. Yet not all young children, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, develop the math skills they need to succeed in school. Gaps in preschool curricula, limited math instruction by early childhood educators, and disparities in family math practices contribute to challenges in preparing children for kindergarten math standards. Unfortunately, children who enter kindergarten unprepared for rigorous mathematics standards are likely to fall further behind and require additional school resources (e.g., tiered instruction, grade retention, special education referrals).

This brief shares research-informed strategies for improving math instruction in early childhood contexts and how WestEd can help support states.
