This brief discusses the creation of empowering, peer-led spaces on campus for middle school students as part of comprehensive strategies to address student well-being. It highlights the collaboration between schools and community health care organizations to establish school-based health care centers that provide physical, mental, and social support services. The Humboldt Independent Practice Association (IPA) partners with schools in Humboldt County to fund and staff 10 school-based wellness centers offering various programs, such as empowerment groups. These youth-empowerment groups foster leadership skills, communication abilities, and positive youth development through evidence-based curricula.

Within these empowerment programs, affinity groups play a crucial role. They provide safe, affirming spaces where students can connect with peers who share similar life experiences or backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging and understanding. The brief emphasizes the importance of trained peer educators serving as co-facilitators alongside adult mentors who value youth voices and reflect student identities.
