In math classrooms, actively engaging with the subject matter can be crucial to learning. However, not all students speak up, ask questions, or express their ideas. Aware of the importance of the equitable participation of all students, mathematics education experts developed an observation tool called Equity Quantified In Participation, or EQUIP. The tool aims to support teachers in identifying and addressing inequities in classroom participation.
This brief report describes the tool and how it is used. It provides specific examples in detail, one from an elementary school and another from a college math class. The report shares how teachers in these contexts used data from the tool to reflect on their teaching practices and focus on equity in classroom participation. The report outlines critical learnings described by the educators who have used the tool, including the opportunities and challenges they faced, and it provides recommendations from these educators to guide those who are interested in using EQUIP themselves.
