Note: This WestEd project was completed in 2017.
California Community College (CCC) and California State University (CSU) systems make major contributions to preservice preparation of early childhood professionals.
Ensuring a well-prepared early childhood workforce at all levels of entry will lead to higher quality preschool programs and ultimately to improved outcomes for young children.
WestEd’s California Department of Education/Early Childhood Education (CDE/ECE) Faculty Initiative Project offers opportunities for college faculty to examine CDE initiatives and publications as they relate to coursework at the CCC and CSU levels.
Finding common reference points across systems is vital to the success of college students studying early care and education, and is critical for the optimal outcomes for the children and families they serve.
Funded by CDE’s Child Development Division (CDD), the Faculty Initiative Project supports faculty at the preservice level by aligning essential content and competencies of key CDE/CDD materials and initiatives with core early childhood education/child development curriculum in the CCC and CSU systems.
The project is guided by faculty needs and knowledge. Through the project’s provision of materials and resources, faculty will have supported opportunities to integrate content of the CDE initiatives into unit-bearing coursework. Doing so will help students attain college certificates and permits granted by the Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CTC), as well as meet campus graduation requirements.
The initiatives to be addressed in the Faculty Initiative Project are:
- The Desired Results Developmental Profile – Revised
- The Prekindergarten Learning and Development Guidelines
- Preschool English Learners: Principles and Practices to Promote Language, Literacy, and Learning – Resource Guide
- Additional documents as they are available and approved by CDD
